Welcome, prospective transfers, to the UC Riverside College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences, a.k.a. CNAS!

Described by current transfers as a tight-knight, open, kind and understanding community, CNAS pursues research that deepens our knowledge of the universe we live in and improves the quality of life for inhabitants of the state, the nation, and the world. Central to this research is educating students like you...students who come to CNAS to learn science, and who leave with an integrated grasp of how they can change the world!

Chancellor Wilcox vs. Scotty Highlander

Chancellor Wilcox's Fall Welcome 2024

UC Riverside's Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox and beloved mascot Scotty Highlander have been getting the campus ready for the start of fall quarter 2024. But over the summer, they caught a bit of Olympic fever and decided to compete in their own set of Olympic-Style games in an attempt to win the coveted title of Highlander All-Around.

Announcers Goldie MacTartan and Victor Glasgow bring you the highlights along with commentary from UCR Olympian and alumna Brenda Martinez ‘10. The Chancellor and Scotty compete in squash, boxing, and artistic swimming—though these events get a UCR twist. After final scores are announced, Chancellor and Scotty hold a press conference to discuss the events as well as the most important aspects of UCR.

But the fun doesn’t end there. Scotty needs to show off his breakdance moves before the final wrap.

CNAS Transfer Connections

The CNAS Transfer Connections Program is dedicated to supporting the academic and professional success of students within the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS); specifically incoming and current transfer students.

Liz Jimenez CNAS Transfer Success Coordinator

Liz Jimenez, Transfer Success Coordinator
Liz began her higher education journey at Santa Ana College, where she transferred to UC Riverside and obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Chicano Studies. Her love for education led to her obtaining her Master’s degree in Higher Education from the University of Redlands. She has a background in Admissions and Advising, however, she currently oversees the CNAS Transfer Connections Program and teaches NASC 092 a 1-unit Transfer Transition Seminar open to new transfers in Fall and Winter. She is passionate about student success and her goal is to ensure that every transfer student feels not only welcome but at home here in CNAS and during their time at UCR. She is here to help transfer students acclimate to the university system and get them connected to faculty, resources, and research.

CNAS Majors

CNAS undergraduates have access to 17 majors within 13 departments, with a total of 29 academic options or tracks. In addition to their coursework, more than half of CNAS undergraduates participate in research during their time at the College.

Maybe you're excited about exploring the world for yourself. Perhaps you're interested in CNAS because of the advantage it gives you for a career in one of the medical or health professions. Maybe you love math and science but aren't sure what direction in which to go, or you've already chose your major, but want to have some other experiences, too. No matter which description fits you best, the CNAS Advantage is for you!

RISE Program 2024
Riverside City College students explore research through RISE
When asked how she's enjoying UC Riverside's Research in Science & Engineering (RISE) program this summer, Riverside City College student Kat McVeigh doesn't hold back. "It's been a great experience!" she says. "Being in an actual lab [and] getting to know the other people in the lab has been pretty cool. Meeting new people is always really nice!" RISE is a summer research program designed for rising sophomores, juniors, incoming transfers, and seniors at UC Riverside. Participants work under the supervision of a faculty mentor on a cutting-edge research project, and the program also features

Doubling down: Assal and Sadaf Sadighian on the long journey from Iran to UC Riverside...and what lies in the future
To say that twin sisters Assal and Sadaf Sadighian are used to long commutes would be an understatement. The twins, who will graduate next spring with Biology degrees, live “a very short drive” away from campus, and will readily tell you that using Google Calendar is an immeasurable help in ordering their days and, metaphorically speaking, cutting that distance down even further. But Assal and Sadaf’s real commute began a few years earlier and a world away in Iran. We asked them about what it was like coming to the U.S. as highschoolers, the ensuing culture shock, discovering UC Riverside and

Triumphing over Adversity: John Perna’s Journey to Academic Excellence
RIVERSIDE, CA - John Perna has a story to tell, and it’s not one many undergraduates share. It’s an underdog tale that would have warmed the heart of author Horatio Alger who, two centuries ago, wrote stories about underprivileged youth that triumphed over adversity through diligence and hard work. “I grew up very poor,” says Perna, who is set to graduate from UC Riverside this spring with a degree in Environmental Sciences and then enter graduate school at UCR. “My mom was a single working mother who worked three jobs at a time, and we lived in multiple homes that were condemned. All I

Research Abroad: A CNAS Story
Jared Hudnall '24, a physics major at the College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences at UC Riverside, spent his summer abroad doing research in Italy. We asked Jared a few questions about his experiences: (Part 1 of 5) What research topic are you working on and where? I'm working at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (@lns.infn) — the largest underground research laboratory in the world and one of the primary research centers for particle physics — in Assergi, Italy, a tiny medieval village on the foot of an Italian national park. I'm doing research testing and developing bleeding edge
